The last line was perhaps a sly dig at the duke’s now well-publicised marital problems but the general sentiment was clear. The country was being called upon to put an end to faction and unite behind the duke, and there was great hope that Mary would soon give birth to a male heir.

The duke’s party did not have matters all their own way. According to Francesco Terriesi, ambassador in London from the court of Tuscany, there were certain members of the ‘whig party’ who went around the streets trying to put out the bonfires. They were busy, ‘holding meetings, and writing, saying, printing with increasing malice all they can to render the person of the Duke odious to the populace’. Perhaps of rather more concern was the fact that intelligent and influential men such as James Houblon were also asking awkward questions about the duke’s responsibility for the Gloucester shipwreck and the consequent large loss of life. In a letter to Pepys dated 13 May, he wrote:
